Google Ads for home services businesses - plumbers, electricians, and tradespeople

Adil Jain|Google Ads|2026-07-02

Plumbers, electricians, heating engineers, builders, decorators, cleaners, and other home services businesses often have the same commercial characteristics: high local demand, urgent purchase intent, trust-dependent decisions, and intense local competition. The paid search strategy that works for this category is more nuanced than most guides suggest.

Home services businesses that run Google Ads successfully share a few common practices that consistently separate them from the majority who run campaigns without getting meaningful results. The differences are mostly structural and strategic rather than tactical - they are about how the campaigns are set up rather than how they are day-to-day managed.

Emergency and urgent intent is the highest-value traffic

Not all home services searches are equal. "Emergency plumber Manchester" comes from someone with a burst pipe who will pay whatever is needed to get help immediately. "Plumber Manchester" comes from someone who might be doing research for a future job. The conversion rate, the urgency, and the tolerance for higher prices are all dramatically different. Campaigns that bid aggressively on emergency and urgent terms - and have landing pages specifically designed for those visitors - consistently outperform generic plumber campaigns in cost per booked job.

Call extensions and call tracking are mandatory

Home services customers convert primarily through phone calls, not online forms. Someone with a heating emergency is not going to fill in a contact form and wait for a callback. They are going to call. If your campaign does not prominently display a clickable phone number and track call conversions, you are flying blind on the most important metric in your account. Set up call tracking, count calls over 45 seconds as conversions, and make phone numbers impossible to miss on mobile landing pages.

Local Service Ads for eligible trades

Many trades are eligible for Google's Local Service Ads - the verified, pay-per-lead listings that appear above standard paid search results. Plumbers, electricians, HVAC engineers, locksmiths, and others can apply for the Google Guaranteed badge. The combination of top-of-page placement, the Google badge, and pay-per-lead rather than pay-per-click economics makes Local Service Ads worth prioritising for eligible trades before standard Google Ads campaigns. Set up LSA first if your trade qualifies.

Reviews as a conversion tool

In home services, reviews are a primary trust signal. A plumber with 150 five-star Google reviews converts clicks at a much higher rate than a competitor with 12 reviews of mixed quality. Actively requesting reviews from every completed job, making it easy for customers to leave them, and responding professionally to all reviews - including negative ones - directly improves paid search conversion rates by raising the trust level of the destination you are paying to send people to.
