Prompt engineering for marketing - what actually works
The quality of AI output in marketing tasks depends heavily on the quality of the prompt. Better prompting produces better results without any change to the AI model itself.
I have seen the same AI tool produce mediocre generic output and genuinely useful creative work for different users, for similar tasks, on the same day. The difference is not the tool - it is how it is being used. Prompt quality is a real skill and one that most marketers have not invested in developing properly.
The role and context principle
Start every significant prompt by giving the AI a role and context. "You are a senior paid search strategist with 15 years of experience working with UK professional services businesses" produces better ad copy than starting directly with the task. The role gives the AI a frame of reference that influences tone, terminology, and assumptions. Context about your audience, your offer, and your brand further constrains the output toward what is actually useful.
Specificity reduces generic output
Vague prompts produce vague responses. "Write me some ad headlines" produces headlines you have seen a thousand times. "Write 20 Google Ads headlines for a family solicitor in Manchester targeting people going through divorce proceedings, emphasising empathy, local knowledge, and a free initial consultation - each headline under 30 characters" produces something worth working with. Specific constraints dramatically improve output quality.
Examples in your prompt
Showing the AI what good looks like is one of the most effective prompting techniques. Include two or three examples of the output style or quality you want. The AI uses your examples as a template. This is particularly effective for brand voice matching - if you have established brand copy, include samples in your prompt and ask for new content in the same style.
Iterative refinement
The first response is a starting point, not a final output. Respond with specific direction: "These are good but too formal - rewrite them in a more conversational tone" or "The third one is the best - write five variations on that approach." Treating AI interaction as a dialogue rather than a single query dramatically improves the utility of the output. Most marketers treat the first response as if it is the best the tool can do. It rarely is.
