Schema markup for local service businesses - what to implement first

Schema markup is code you add to your website to give Google explicit information about your business, your content, and your offerings. For local service businesses, the right schema can generate review stars, FAQ dropdowns, and business information directly in search results.

Structured data does not directly boost rankings. What it does is improve how your listings appear in search results - making them larger, more informative, and more clickable. For local service businesses competing on Google, standing out in the results page matters. Schema markup is one of the tools that helps you do that.

LocalBusiness schema - the foundation

LocalBusiness schema tells Google the basics about your business: name, address, phone number, opening hours, business type, and website. This information can appear directly in Knowledge Panel results and local search listings. For businesses with physical locations or service areas, this is the most important schema type to implement. Use Google's Structured Data Markup Helper to generate the code and add it to your homepage and contact page.

Review schema

If your website hosts genuine customer reviews, AggregateRating schema can surface your star rating directly in search results. This is the star rating that appears under your page title in Google. Higher click-through rates are consistently associated with visible star ratings in organic results. The key requirement is that the reviews must exist on your own website, not be pulled from Google Business Profile or Trustpilot - those platforms have their own schema implementation.

FAQ schema

FAQ schema can generate dropdown FAQ sections directly in Google's search results, expanding your listing significantly and potentially pushing competitor results further down the page. This works best on service pages where you include genuine frequently asked questions with clear, concise answers. Write the FAQs to answer the questions your target audience actually asks, not marketing fluff. Google rewards schema that genuinely helps searchers.

Service schema

Service schema is useful for professional services businesses - solicitors, accountants, tradespeople, consultancies. It allows you to specify the services you offer, the area you serve, and pricing information where relevant. This helps Google understand the scope of your offering and match your pages to relevant queries more accurately.

Testing your implementation

Use Google's Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results) to check that your schema is correctly implemented and eligible for rich results. Fix any errors the tool flags before your pages are recrawled. Also check Search Console's Enhancements section after implementation - it shows which pages have valid structured data and flags any issues Google detected during indexing.
